Chiang Mai EFEO Centre
The kick-off meeting of the EU project SEATIDE, coordinated by the EFEO and funded under the European Commission's 7th Framework Programme (SEATIDE - Integration in Southeast Asia: Trajectories of Inclusion, Dynamics of Exclusion) will be held at the Chiang Mai EFEO Centre and at Chiang Mai University (CMU) on 1-2 February 2013. The meeting will bring together the European and Southeast Asian project partners with a view to finalize the calendar of research activities to be carried out during the three years of the project, and to organize the modalities of result dissemination.
An official SEATIDE launch ceremony will take place on the morning of Friday 1st February, to present the project's research objectives and introduce the project partners to EU and ASEAN diplomats and local journalists invited for this occasion.

It is with deep sorrow that we have learned of the death, at the age of 91, of our colleague Philip N. Jenner, professor emeritus of the University of Hawaii. After learning Japanese during World War II, he first worked with the team headed by General Douglas MacArthur. Once he had completed his doctorate in linguistics at the University of Hawaii, in 1963, he dedicated most of his scholarly career to the study of the Môn-Khmer languages, and especially Ancient Khmer. A tireless researcher, he continued working throughout his retirement. Especially notable are the publications he produced in 2011: three dictionaries and a grammar of Ancient Khmer, all of which bore witness to his wide knowledge.
In addition to his erudition, those who had the opportunity to meet Philip will always remember his humane qualities: his kindness, his availability, and the generosity with which he gave advice and encouragement to all those who sought it.

From January 31 to February 2, Franciscus Verellen, Director, is visiting Chiang Mai. He is signing a cooperative agreement with Chiang Mai University (CMU) on January 31 and taking part in the launch of the SEATIDE project (see Editorial).
On Feburary 3 and 4, Franciscus Verellen is part of the official delegation led by Jean-Marc Ayrault, the French Prime Minister, at the funeral ceremonies in Phnom Penh for His Majesty the King Father Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia.

From February 9 to March 3 Eric Bourdonneau is in Cambodia as part of the archaeological mission to Koh Ker. In collaboration with APSARA, the IWR (Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing, Heidelberg University), the restoration workshop at the Cambodian National Museum, and Olivier Cunin (architect and specialist in the archaeology of building construction), he will be taking up again the operations that began in 2011 and 2012: the transfer to Siem Reap of the last sculptured fragments of the monumental dance of Shiva; the 3D scanning of the fragments of the statues kept at the Preah Norodom Sihanouk Museum; and the study and 3D reconstruction of the architectural context of the statues.

On Feburary 14 and 15 Michela Bussotti is taking part in a British Academy colloquium on The production and Circulation of Printed Books in the Occident and Orient, from the Accession of the Tang Dynasty (c. 618) to the First Industrial Revolution, in London. She is talking, with Han Qui (IHNS, CAS), on the topic: "Typography for a modern world? The ways of Chinese movable types."

Kuo Li Ying's seminar at the École pratique des hautes études on "La chronique des maîtres de la lignée du Buddha Vairocana, composée à Dunhuang (fin IXe - début Xe siècle) [The chronicle of the masters in the lineage of the Buddha Vairocana, composed in Dunhuang (late 9th to early 10th century)]" is taking place on February 15 at the French National Library (manuscript room). Nathalie Monnet (chief conservator, responsible for the Dunhuang manuscripts and Chinese holdings at the BNF) is giving an introduction to the holdings, including the Pelliot collection, and Kuo Li Yin will show and comment on the manuscripts that are the subject of her seminar.

From February 16 to 22 Pierre-Yves Manguin is visiting Canada, McGill University in Montreal, at the invitation of the Indian Ocean World Centre (IOWC). There he is to take part in a workshop on Maritime Perspectives in Eurasian and Indian Ocean World History: towards a Global History, where he is giving the keynote speech entitled "Austronesian shipping in the Indian Ocean: from outrigger boats to trading ships." He is also giving a lecture at the IOWC and is taking part in the establishment of a program on ancient migrations across the Indian Ocean.

The Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres, one of the five Academies that make up the Institut de France, has just welcomed under its roof a sponsored foundation dedicated to the memory of the publisher and historian of religions Pierre-Antoine Bernheim, specialist in Judaism and early Christianity. This foundation will award each year a Prix d'histoire des religions [Prize in the history of religions] of the sum of €10,000, granted for a work either written in French or translated into French that concerns this discipline.

From February 5 to 19 Dr. Anna A. Ślączka, Curator of South Asian Art at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, will be in Pondicherry to continue her study on the dating and conservation of Chola bronzes.

Peter Skilling is giving a lecture on the topic "Every rise has its fall: Thoughts on the history of Buddhism in Central India" at the international conference on Buddhism and Jainism organized jointly by the Lumbini Institute for Research (LIRI Nepal) and Marburg University (Germany).

On February 1, Pierre Pichard and Christophe Pottier are giving a presentation on "Archéologie et conservation patrimoniale: contributions françaises au Siam et en Indochine [Archaeology and Heritage conservation: French contributions to Siam and Indochina]" as part of an MA seminar on the history of Franco-Thai relations directed by N. Revire at Thammasat University in Bangkok.
Christophe Pottier is spending the entire month of February at Angkor to direct the 2013 excavations being carried out by the Franco-Khmer Mission on the Management of the Angkor Territory (MAFKATA) as they continue their study of sites from the Ak Yum period.

From February 1 to 4 the funeral ceremonies for His Majesty the King Father Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia will take place north of the Royal Palace, across from the National Museum.
The EFEO Center in Phnom Penh is working with the National Museum to present documents concerning royal funeral ceremonies in Cambodia. Old photographs from the Museum's collection are being shown, supplemented by some photographs from the EFEO's Henri Marchal collection. In addition, a copy of an illustrated and annotated document from 1903 giving the rules for the progress of a royal funerary procession has been sent to us by the Alençon City Library (from the Adhémard Leclère collection). A Gaumont-Pathé newsreel showing the 1928 funeral of King Sisowath is also being presented,

The third season of excavations in the Yaçodharâçrama research program (directors D. Soutif and J. Estève) is running from February 5 to March 15. This year investigations are concentrating on Prasat Komnap South, the Vaishnava âçrama at Angkor, and on Prasat Ong Mong, the Buddhist âçrama.

The joint inauguration of the premises to house the Hanoi Center's delegation in South Vietnam and the AFD's representation in Hô-Chi-Minh-Ville is taking place on February 25 and 26.
On February 25, a reception is being organized in the premises of the villa at 13 Hai Ba Trung, in the presence of the French Ambassador to Vietnam, the political officials of the People's Committee in Hô-Chi-Minh-Ville, the AFD's director in Vietnam, and the EFEO's Director of Studies. On this occasion an exhibition made up of some thirty panels shows the activities of both the EFEO (Textes et Terrain. Remise en perspective de 20 ans d'activités de l'EFEO au Vietnam [Texts and Terrain. An Overview of 20 years of EFEO Activities in Vietnam]) and the AFD (AFD: Objectif développement [AFD: Development Objectives]). This exhibition will highlight the cooperative efforts, both scholarly and operational, that unite these two institutions.
On February 26 a second exhibition, entitled Imagerie populaire du Vietnam-triptyque [Popular imagery of Vietnam-triptych], is opening at the media library of the Idécaf (Institut d'échanges culturels avec la France [Institute for Cultural Exchanges with France]). In some fifteen panels, this exhibition presents selected extracts from, on the one hand, the two great collections put together during the first half of the 20th century in the northern part of the country (the Henri Oger collection and the Maurice Durand collection), and, on the other, an original illustrated manuscript of the Luc Vân Tiên, the epic poem of the South, preserved at the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles Lettres. This manuscript is in the process of being digitized and published by the delegation from the South of Vietnam. The exhibition opening offers the opportunity for an accompanying conference dedicated to popular imagery in Viêt Nam, with addresses by four contributors: Professor Phan Huy Lê (President of the Association of Historians of Vietnam and corresponding member of the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles Lettres, Paris); Olivier Tessier (on Henri Oger's Encyclopedia of Annamite technologies); Philippe Papin (on Maurice Durand and popular imagery); and Pascal Bourdeaux (on the manuscript of the Luc Vân Tiên and the digitization-publication project).

Centre EFEO de Chiang Mai
La première réunion (kick-off meeting) du projet européen SEATIDE (Integration in Southeast Asia: Trajectories of Inclusion, Dynamics of Exclusion), coordonné par l'EFEO et financé par le 7eme PCRD de la Commission européenne, se tient à Chiang Mai, au Centre EFEO et à l'université (CMU), les 1er et 2 février 2013. Elle réunit les principaux participants européens et sud-est asiatiques du consortium SEATIDE en vue de finaliser le calendrier de ses activités scientifiques sur trois ans et de préparer les modalités de valorisation du projet.
Une cérémonie de lancement du projet SEATIDE a lieu le matin du vendredi 1er février, afin de faire connaitre ses objectifs scientifiques, et de présenter les participants au consortium constitué aux représentants européens et asiatiques du corps diplomatique et aux journalistes de la presse régionale invités pour cette circonstance.

Nous avons appris avec une profonde tristesse le décès, à l'âge de 91 ans, de notre collègue Philip N. Jenner, professeur émérite de l'université de Hawaii.
Ayant appris le japonais pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, il travailla d'abord dans l'équipe de Douglas MacArthur. Après avoir obtenu un doctorat de linguistique de l'université de Hawaii en 1963, il consacra l'essentiel de sa carrière à l'étude des langues môn-khmères, et en particulier du vieux khmer.
Infatigable, il ne cessait d'interrompre sa retraite et avait notamment achevé, en 2011, la publication de trois dictionnaires et d'une grammaire de khmer ancien qui témoignent de son immense savoir.
Autant que de son érudition, ceux qui ont eu la chance d'être en contact avec Philip se souviendront de ses qualités humaines, de sa gentillesse, sa disponibilité, et de la générosité avec laquelle il dispensait conseils et encouragements à tous ceux qui le sollicitaient.

Franciscus Verellen, directeur, est en mission à Chiang Mai du 31 janvier au 2 février. Il signe un accord de coopération avec l'université de Chiang Mai (CMU) le 31 janvier et participe au lancement du projet SEATIDE (voir éditorial).
Franciscus Verellen rejoint la délégation officielle conduite par Jean-Marc Ayrault, Premier ministre français, pour assister aux funérailles de S. M. le Roi-père Norodom Sihanouk du Cambodge les 3 et 4 février à Phnom Penh.

Eric Bourdonneau se rend au Cambodge du 9 février au 3 mars dans le cadre de la mission archéologique à Koh Ker. Nathalie Monnet (conservateur en chef, chargée des manuscrits de Dunhuang et des fonds chinois de la BNF) introduit les fonds dont le fonds Pelliot puis Kuo Liying présente et commente les manuscrits sur lesquels porte son séminaire.

Les funérailles de S. M. le Roi-père Norodom Sihanouk du Camboge se tiennent au nord du Palais Royal (en face du Musée National) du 1er au 4 février.
L'EFEO à Phnom Penh s'associe au Musée National pour présenter des documents relatifs aux funérailles royales au Cambodge.
Des tirages photographiques anciens issus des fonds du musée sont montrés, complétés par quelques photographies du fonds Henri Marchal de l'EFEO.
En complément, la copie d'un document (1903), dessiné et annoté, qui règle le déroulement d'un cortège funéraire royal nous a été envoyée par la bibliothèque municipale d'Alençon (fonds Adhémard Leclère). Un film Gaumont-Pathé qui retrace le déroulement des funérailles du roi Sisowath en 1928 est aussi présenté.

La troisième campagne de fouilles du programme de recherche Yaçodharâçrama (dir. D. Soutif & J. Estève) se déroule du 5 février au 15 mars. Cette année, les recherches se concentrent sur le Prasat Komnap Sud, l'âçrama vishnuite d'Angkor et sur le Prasat Ong Mong, l'âçrama bouddhique.

L'inauguration conjointe des locaux de l'implantation de la délégation au Sud du Vietnam du centre de l'EFEO de Hanoi et du bureau de représentation de l'AFD à Hô-Chi-Minh-Ville a lieu les 25 et 26 février.
Le 25 février, une réception est organisée dans les locaux de la villa du 13 Hai Ba Trung, en présence de l'Ambassadeur de France au Vietnam, des autorités politiques du Comité Populaire de Hô-Chi-Minh-Ville, du directeur de l'AFD au Vietnam et du directeur des Études de l'EFEO. A cette occasion, une exposition composée d'une trentaine de panneaux présentera les attributions respectives de l'EFEO (Textes et Terrain. Remise en perspective de 20 ans d'activités de l'EFEO au Viêt Nam) et de l'AFD (AFD : Objectif développement), et évoquera la dynamique de rapprochement scientifique et opérationnelle qui fédère ces deux institutions.
Le 26 février, une seconde exposition intitulée Imagerie populaire du Vietnam-triptyque, est inaugurée à la médiathèque de l'Idécaf (Institut d'échanges culturels avec la France). En une quinzaine de panneaux, cette exposition présente des extraits choisis issus, d'une part, des deux grands corpus collectés dans le courant de la première moitié du XXe siècle au Nord du pays (corpus Henri Oger et corpus Maurice Durand) et, d'autre part, d'un manuscrit original et enluminé du Luc Vân Tiên, poème épique du Sud, conservé à l'Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres, et qui fait l'objet d'un projet de numérisation-publication conduit par la délégation au Sud du Vietnam. Cette inauguration donne lieu à une conférence consacrée à l'imagerie populaire au Viêt Nam, et est animée par quatre intervenants: le professeur Phan Huy Lê (président de l'association des historiens du Vietnam et membre correspondant de l'Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres, Paris) ; Olivier Tessier (Encyclopédie des techniques annamites de Henri Oger) ; Philippe Papin (Imagerie populaire de Maurice Durand) ; Pascal Bourdeaux (le manuscrit du Luc Vân Tiên et le projet de numérisation-publication).

Le mercredi 27 février (à 18h), Kacem Zoughari (International Research Center for Japanese Studies, Nichibunken) donne une conférence aux Kyoto Lectures sur le thème : « The Transmission's Modes in Japanese Classical Fighting Art: A Study on Transmission Documents (densho) ». Cette conférence, co-organisée par les centres de l'EFEO et de l'ISEAS, a lieu à l'Institut de recherches en sciences humaines de l'université de Kyoto.
Le jeudi 28 février (à partir de 11h), le séminaire sur le bouddhisme organisé par Iyanaga Nobumi a lieu à l'Institut français du Japon-Kansai.

Le 27 février, invitée par la Société des amis du musée Cernuschi, Élisabeth Chabanol donne, à l'auditorium du musée, une conférence sur les principaux sites historiques et archéologiques (tombes, sites de palais et monastères) de Kaesông, en Corée du Nord. En particulier, est présenté le matériel archéologique découvert dans l'ancienne capitale du Koryô (918-1392) et maintenant dispersé.
