Véronique Degroot

After a degree in classical Western archaeology at the Catholic University of Louvain and a Master in Southeast Asian archaeology at the School of Oriental and African Studies (London), Véronique Degroot took part in the excavations of the royal palace of Angkor Thom (1996- 1998). In 2009, she defended a PhD dissertation at Leiden University entitled “Candi, Space and Landscape. A study on the distribution, orientation and spatial organization of Central Javanese temple remains ”. She then worked as a curator responsible for ancient Javanese collections at the Museum Volkenkunde (National Museum of Ethnology of the Netherlands). In 2012, she joined the EFEO, as a contract researcher and then as a lecturer. Head of the EFEO Center in Jakarta from 2015 to 2020, she strengthened the links between the EFEO and the Pusat Penelitian Arkeologi Nasional (National Center for Archaeological Research) by organizing training courses and by launching an archaeological survey along the north coast of Central Java (PANTURAH).

Véronique Degroot is a member of the Center for South-East Asian Studies (CASE, Joint Research Unit 8170, CNRS / EHESS). She is part of the editorial board of the journal Archipel (CNRS) and of the scientific committee of Berkala Arkeologi (Balai Arkeologi Yogyakarta). She is a member of the EFEO research unit Centers of Civilization, participates in the project DHARMA: the "domestication" of Hindu asceticism and the religious making of South and Southeast Asia (ERC n ° 809994) and is co-director of the Franco-Indonesian archaeological mission in South Sumatra (SriBumi).
