Lecture: New Caledonia and Vietnamese Contract Labour Migration in Context
12 NOVEMBER 19
The migration of Vietnamese contract workers to New Caledonia is the subject of a lecture at the Department of History at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi, by Andrew Hardy and Isabelle Merle, professor of history at Aix-Marseille University and director of CREDO. In the first part of the lecture, Isabelle Merle seeks to understand the position of Vietnamese contract workers in local society regarding their legal status and living conditions. In the second part Andrew Hardy raises the question of the return to Vietnam of workers stranded in New Caledonia by the Second World War between 1960 and 1964 and their reception in Haiphong and their places of resettlement. The existence of a movement of return to New Caledonia after 1975 is the subject of a concluding discussion.
