Survey of the ‘upstream market’ (nguồn) at An Khê, Gia Lai province
29 NOVEMBRE 18
The location of An Khê plateau, birthplace of the Tây Sơn rebellion, gave it a key role in the central region’s highland-lowland trade. Understanding this history was the main aim of a survey organised (29/11-2/12) by Andrew Hardy and his colleagues. On the left bank of the Ba river, An Khê town’s old quarter and the temples associated with the former trading centre, surrounded by a wall (Luỹ An Khê, now destroyed), were studied with the help of the historian Nguyễn Quảng Ngoc, who did research here in the 1970s. On the right bank, the survey allowed the team to establish the existence of an even older upstream market. Other vestiges show the use of the plateau and its multiple communication routes at the time of Champa, and encouraged the team to return in 2019 to organise, in collaboration with the local authorities, further surveys and archaeological excavations.
