What becomes of the scholar who fails the mandarinal examinations? This question, applied to the late 19th century history of central Vietnam, motivates Andrew Hardy and Đào Thế Đức in their fieldwork research in Nghệ An, conducted during several short trips. Ancestral temples, genealogies, popular memory all contain information of use for the study of the scholars, who include Hoàng Phan Thái, executed by King Tự Đức in 1865 for ‘anti-dynastic activities’. The research was done with the collaboration of colleagues from the Nghệ An Province Centre for Social Science and Humanities Research.
