Une chronique du Sud-Laos : le Tamnan Muang Khamthong Luang
09 MAY 11

The Tamnan Muang Khamthong Luang (or Pheun Muang Khamthong Luang) is a long chronicle composed between the years 1880-1920 by Upahat Ba Phoy, a learned civil servant of the Saravan region. The text survives in the form of a palm leaf manuscript of 1,571 pages. This is probably the original version, since there is only one copy and it is written in the script of the early 20th century. It is something of a unique document among the historical archives of the Lower Mekong Basin, providing a direct and personal testimony of events which played a significant role in shaping the destiny of the Lao people. The Tamnan Muang Khamtong Luang adds indispensable value to our knowledge of Lao history - modern and older. It should become, as its author explicitly wished, a subject for study and reflection for generations to come.
