Prof. Véronique DegrootAssociate Professor, French School of Asian Studies (EFEO)
Online Course
October 15 – December 17 2021

Course Program (all classes 15:00-17:00 Taiwan Time)
Part I - From the Paleolithic to the rise of the Mataram kingdom

Reconstructing the ancient history of Indonesia, the world’s fourth most population nation, is a complicated and fascinating task. The archipelago, located half way between China and India, Asia and Australia, has been a crossroads of people and cultures since the dawn of time. Indonesia counts thousands of islands, each with its culture and history. This course will focus on western Indonesia – mostly Java and Sumatra – from the Paleolithic period to the 10th c. and will present the archaeology of the Hindu-Buddhist period, from the first traces of pan-Asian interactions until the rise of the Mataram kingdom. While studying world-famous monuments as well as little-known sites, students will be introduced to the various disciplines pertaining to prehistoric and historical archaeology – history, epigraphy, architecture, cultural studies, art history – as well as to current debates. The program given below may be adapted according to the interests and previous knowledge of the students. Homework will be limited to a few readings - a large part of the literature being either in Dutch or in Indonesian.
