Abstract:
How do archaeologists reconstruct and interpret the past burial practices of Oceania? How do they use them to define ancient cultures and historical trajectories in the Pacific area? This talk explores the developing approaches and themes taken by 20th century archaeologists, to study burials and behaviors to cope with death, and highlights significant changes in thoughts, concepts, and methodology over time, from the 1930's to the 1990's.
