Title: 3D Imaging Techniques and Morphometrics in Palaeoanthropology and Archaeology

Date: Wednesday, May 23 2018. 3 p.m.
Venue: 7F, Conference Room, Hsiu-Chi Building, Guangfu Campus, National Cheng Kung University, Tainan

Abstract:
Imaging techniques and adapted analytical methods such as morphometrics
are rapidly improving and developing. They are more and more frequently
used in palaeoanthropology and archaeology, especially techniques and
equipment such as surface scanners, photogrammetry and tomography. Those
techniques allow to obtain high-quality 3D models of a very large
variety (in terms of size, color, material, etc) of objects such as
fossils, tools, ceramics, and in-situ features such as archaeological
layers, burials, rock-paintings, etc. High-quality 3D models can be used
for very diverse applications, including recording of temporary /
perishable features, museographic displays, 3D printing, and comparative
analyses. In this conference, we aim at reviewing currently available
imaging techniques and evaluate their usability and efficiency in
palaeoanthropology and archaeology. We also aim at reviewing analytical
methodologies adapted to 3D data, with examples of recently published
applications of the so-called “modern morphometrics”.
