Title: Makué and Shokraon,Two Early Settlements in North-Vanuatu: Some Interrogations and Thoughts about Lapita and Post-Lapita

Date : Wednesday, 1 November  2017, 2:00 p.m.
Venue: Room 702, Research Building, IHP, Academia Sinica, Taipei City

Abstract:
The archaeological sites of Makué and Shokraon, in the north of the Vanuatu archipelago, respectively dated to around 3100 and 2500 BP, are good evidences of two important periods in the prehistory of many Pacific islands. The presentation of these two sites will allow me to discuss some established ideas about what Lapita is or is not and how it ends or develops. Rather than a formal talk, this presentation aims at fostering discussion and widening the debate on such questions as the Lapita economy, the Lapita legacy and the origin of todays inhabitants of Vanuatu.
