Lecture by Dr Emmanuel FRANCIS (Centre for the Study of Manuscript Culture, University of Hamburg, ECAF member)
29 FEBRUARY 12
Emmanuel Francis will give a lecture on 29th February 2012 in the EFEO Library, 19 Dumas Street, at 4.30 pm.The title is: "Supplementing poetry: The additional stanzas to the Tirumurukāṟṟuppaṭai'Summary: This lecture is a presentation of my on-going research about the additional stanzas found in the manuscripts (i.e. text and/or commentary) of the Tirumurukāṟṟuppaṭai. These stanzas come for the Tirumurukāṟṟuppaṭai in a far greater number than for any other poem of the Caṅkam corpus. So far, after examining 40 manuscripts, 44 of them are available, which is more than the total obtained for all the other Caṅkam poems. The fact that the Tirumurukāṟṟuppaṭai is also part of the 11th Tirumuṟai probably explains this situation.
I will address the following questions. Where are additional stanzas found in the manuscripts of the Tirumurukāṟṟuppaṭai (beginning and/or end)? How are they demarcated from the text and/or commentary (on an independent page or not; with punctuation and layout devices or not)? What is their origin (composed especially for the Tirumurukāṟṟuppaṭai or borrowed from other works)? What are the different types of additional stanzas (kāppu, kaṭavuḷ vāḻttu, phalaśruti)? What is their function besides those indicated by their types?
