Tenth International Intensive Sanskrit Reading Retreat (TIISRR) in Siem Reap
16 JANUARY 19
From 3rd to 16th January 2019 in Siem Reap, the EFEO organised the Tenth International Intensive Sanskrit Reading Retreat (TIISRR). Several Cambodian inscriptions were included in the program and many reading sessions took place among the monuments around Angkor, where many of its inscriptions are engraved. Participants from several levels gathered at the EFEO Centre in Siem Reap from the following countries: Germany, France, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Nepal, Russia, United Kingdom, United States. Three reading sessions a day were devoted to Sanskrit works whose critical editions are in preparation: 1) Chapter 12 of Raghuvaṃśa of Kālidāsa, with the commentary of Vallabhadeva (sessions led by Csaba Dezső, Eötvös Lorand University, Budapest); 2) the discussion on the nature of the recognition (pratyabhijñā) in the Nyāyamañjarī (9th century) of Jayantabhaṭṭa (readings led by Alex Watson, Asoka University, Delhi); 3) a selection of mostly unpublished Khmer inscriptions in Sanskrit, dating from the 7th through the 12th centuries (sessions led by Dominic Goodall, EFEO, Pondicherry). This event was made possible by the EFEO centre of Siem Reap, headed by Éric Bourdonneau, and financially supported by PSL (Paris Sciences Lettres), thanks to the SPIF ATLAS project ("Ancient Texts, Languages and Archeology of South and South-East Asia"). That project, led by Véronique Degroot (EFEO, Jakarta), Valérie Gillet (EFEO, Paris) and Emmanuel Francis (CNRS / EHESS / CEIAS), allows the organisation of training workshops for PSL students.
