From Mukula Bhaṭṭa to Maṃmaṭa (readings in Sanskrit poetics)
26 JULY 18
From 23rd July to 10th August 2018 (11am-1pm / 2-4pm), a small workshop is being held whose purpose is to produce a new critical edition of an important Sanskrit text on Alaṃkāraśāstra, Mukula Bhaṭṭa's Abhidhāvṛttamātṛkā, written in Kashmir in the 9th century, and of its critique by Maṃmaṭa, the celebrated author of the Kāvyaprakāśa, in a lesser-known treatise called Śabdavyāpāravicāra. Mukula is best known as an ancient adversary of Ānandavardhana's theory of "poetic suggestion" (dhvani), and his treatise may be the first systematic investigation of "linguistic functions" (vṛtti) in the history of Indian poetics. Maṃmaṭa, in turn, systematically criticises Mukula's views from the point of view of the dhvani-school. Both texts shall be read and analysed integrally during the workshop. Their new edition will be based on hitherto unexploited manuscripts from North India, in particular a precious 14th-century palm-leaf manuscript from Rajasthan.
The principal participants of the workshop, other than Hugo David and S.L.P. Anjaneya Sarma, are Daniele Cuneo, lecturer at Paris III, and Alessandro Graheli from the IKGA, Austrian Academy of Sciences, who has received a grant from the Project 28069-G24 of the FWF (Austrian Research Fund), in the context of the project “The Meaning of the Sentence in Indian Philosophy”, to spend a month (July-August) in Pondicherry to work on these critical editions.
