Dr. Indra Manuel expounding the Paripāṭal
Classical Tamil Winter Seminar 2018
15 FEBRUARY 18
In 2018 the CTSS (Classical Tamil Summer Seminar) returns to the old winter schedule (becoming once again a CTWS) and takes place in the Pondicherry Centre of the EFEO for 4 weeks from 12th February to 9th March 2018. In addition to the customary advanced reading groups, a beginner’s course will take place.
The first two weeks, under the guidance of Indra Manuel, are devoted to a literary text notorious for its complexity, the late Caṅkam anthology Paripāṭal, once a collection of 70 songs, some 24 of which survive, along with a number of fragments. We are reading hymns that celebrate Tirumāl, Murukaṉ and the river Vaiya. In the last two weeks, G. Vijayavenugopal will introduce us to the one of the few surviving Puṟam works, the 12th-century Kaliṅkattuparaṇi, which tells of demonesses dancing on the corpses of the Cōḻa king’s battlefield.
