PRESENTATION
P. Skilling in Singapore: Aesthetics of Devotion: The Buddha in Thai Art
21 JANUARY 13
Peter Skilling will give a talk entitled "Aesthetics of Devotion: The Buddha in Thai Art" on Monday 21 Jan 2013 (7 to 8.30pm) @ Ngee Ann Auditorium, ACM Empress Place (Basement) of the Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore
At the heart of Thai art and aesthetics is the image of the Buddha, the awakened one. More than a simple statue animated by devotion, the Buddha image presides over the assembly hall as a living presence. The Thais have excelled in the production of images of great beauty, from the time of the famous bronzes of Sukhothai up to the present. Devotees interact with images on a daily basis. This talk presents some of the famous Buddha images of Thailand along with some of the many liturgical and ritual customs that have developed over the centuries.
