THE THIRD CHULALONGKORN-EFEO GRADUATE SYMPOSIUM
28 FEBRUARY 11
NEW RESEARCH ON BUDDHISM AND THAI STUDIES
Organized by:
Thai Studies Center, Faculty of Arts and The Empowering Network of International Thai Studies (ENIT), Thai Studies Institute, Chulalongkorn University in conjunction with The Buddhist Studies Group of the École française d'Extrême-Orient
Monday, 28 February 2011, 1.00 pm - 3.30 pm Room 203, Mahachulalongkorn Building, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University
Rationale:
In the wide sense "Buddhist Studies" embraces many disciplines and fields, from archaeology to art history to anthropology, from literature to language to philosophy. In recent years the field has changed radically as a result of new discoveries, new research methods, and new approaches. Given the pervasive role of Buddhism in all aspects of Thai history, culture and society from the earliest period to the present, Buddhist studies is integral to Thai Studies, and is essential in the curriculum of the Thai Studies Centre. The École française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO) has over one hundred years tradition of research in Asia, often focussed on Buddhism. At present the EFEO Centres in Bangkok and Chiang Mai have several research projects related to Buddhism. The present Graduate Symposium is co-arranged by the The Buddhist Studies Group of the École française d'Extrême-Orient as an activity of its quadrenial project, "The Transmission and Inculturation of Buddhism in Asia".The seminar will be a forum for a new generation of international scholars to report on their research topics and to discuss the current state of their fields.
