This lecture cycle will explore traditional images which, in China, Japan and Vietnam, were designed for a specific purpose, often unique, and thus, intended to disappear once used. Images of the New Year, for calendars or political propaganda were ephemeral productions. Yet, some have survived and constitute a field of study today, akin to depictions of religious pilgrimages, talismanic images, engravings retracing the history of towns, illustrations of guilds and erotic albums.
This cycle is composed of eight conferences which will be held from December 2009 to June 2010, either at the Ecole française d’Extrême-Orient, or the Musée Guimet.
