Hindu-Buddhist edifices enshrined the sacred. The mosques that supplanted
them gradually shifted towards increasingly diverse attempts to build
beautiful places of assemblage.
Professor Anthony Reid is a Southeast Asian historian at the Asia Research Institute of the National University of Singapore, of which he was founding Director (2002-07). His recent books include Southeast Asia in the Age of Commerce, 1450 1680 (2 vols. 1988-93); Charting the Shape of Early Modern Southeast Asia (1999); and An Indonesian Frontier: Acehnese and other histories of Sumatra (2004).
