Corpus of Cham Inscriptions

Head of programme: Arlo Griffiths

Launched in 2009, this programme was directly inspired by the transversal Corpus of Khmer Inscriptions programme with which it shares its methodology and most of its goals: chief among these is the continuation and updating of the inventory of inscriptions from the Kingdom of Champa, which was begun by the EFEO in 1923. With this in mind, we embarked on a series of field missions to identify the current location of the inscriptions and where necessary made copies. We also listed those which were missing, and also reported a number of new discoveries that did not feature in published inventory. We are now studying the inscriptions that have already been published along with those that have yet to appear in print, which we will soon be publishing. Given that the corpus of Cham inscriptions is on a much smaller scale than its Khmer world counterpart, and in view of the fact that the number of new discoveries is much lower, we have been able to make rapid progress. The programme aims to present online versions of the new inventory and of the corpus itself with a fresh reading of all of the inscriptions, unabridged translations and substantial visual documentation.
