Archaeology of Tarumanagara

Head of programme: Pierre-Yves Manguin

Starting in 2002, excavations amid a vast complex of Buddhist monuments from the 5th to the 11th centuries CE for the Tarumanagara archaeological mission in western Java, which were concluded in 2006, led to the discovery of a proto-historic cemetery in which the grave goods included a large quantity of Indian pottery dating from the Ist to the 4TH centuries CE. Stratigraphic and carbon dating analysis of these artefacts provided data for a detailed chronology of the transition of this site to an Indianised culture, and the diverse phases of abandon and occupation during this period. Now in 2010, the study and analysis of data from the project's five archaeological digs remains ongoing; and researchers and doctoral students are preparing a number of geological, physical anthropological, zoological, Buddhist epigraphic, and architectural reports which will be compiled for a publication on the project.
