Hanoi, 1980-1982. The international embargo meant that the diplomat John Ramsden had little embassy work to do: instead, he took to walking around the city with a camera. His photographs are works of great beauty, and they capture something of the movement and immobility of the city's life in the years after the war. Returning to Vietnam in 2013, John Ramsden's conversations with writers and historians resulted in the essays that accompany the photographs here, including recollections of 1980s Hanoi by Dương Trung Quốc, Vũ Thị Minh Hương and Phạm Tường Vân, and an afterword by Andrew Hardy of the École française d'Extrême-Orient.
