The monograph is based on a detailed study of 200 19th-century donation inscriptions in ten villages of northern Vietnam. It allows us to understand the motivations for giving and itineraries of gifts, the nature and value of donated goods, and also the quid pro quo stipulated in the contract. It thus reveals the religious, social and economic underpinnings of an important charitable practice characteristic of northern villages.
