Defence of the thesis of Uthaya Veluppillai on Cīkāḻi
19 APRIL 13
Uthaya Veluppillai defended her thesis, entitled Cīkāḻi : hymnes, héros, histoire. Rayonnement d’un lieu saint shivaïte au Pays Tamoul ("Cīkāḻi: Hymns, Heroes, History. Outreach & Influence of a Śaiva shrine in the Tamil country") in Paris III on 19th April 2013. Thanks to EFEO scholarships, during her several stays in Pondicherry, Uthaya Velupillai was able to read the hymns of Campantar with the great Tamil scholar the late T.V. Gopal Iyer, to whom this fine thesis is dedicated. She was also able to study several Tamil inscriptions on the spot with Professor Vijayavenugopal, and she was able to go frequently to Cīkāḻi to examine the temple and observe its religious activities. Among the researchers of the EFEO, Charlotte Schmid and Dominic Goodall were members of the jury.
