PRESENTATION
Kyoto Lectures 2015-11-24
24 NOVEMBER 15
Title: Japanese Fluxus: The roaring avant-garde
Speaker: Luciana Galliano
Tuesday, November 24th, 18:00h
@Institute for Research in Humanities (IRH), Kyoto University (seminar room 1, 1st floor)

This talk will explore the Japanese output within the ‘non-art' movement named ‘Fluxus'. Many Japanese artists took part in shaping this special group of artists, the first truly global avantgarde movement in which music played a prominent role. There is now consensus and recognition that Fluxus has been a pivotal movement in re-defining the role of art and artist identity in the contemporary world, in the birth of such key contemporary art forms as concept art, installation, performance art, intermedia, and video. Expressing a need for a new intellectual culture, the involvement of Japanese as protagonists in an international artistic trend like Fluxus-with its many issues of ambiguity between the cultivated and the everyday, freedom from dogma, the regaining of a corporal presence in art, the idea of the spontaneity of sound, a radical simplification in the face of European linguistic complication-had conversely a strong influx on the music avant-garde scene within Japan. Many Fluxus events in Tokyo during the Sixties involved a number of artists, while the "main stream avant-garde" often presented event-like concerts.

Luciana Galliano:
Musicologist and scholar of musical aesthetics, Luciana Galliano combines a competence in contemporary music with a deep knowledge of Japanese music. After receiving her doctorate from the Tokyo University of Arts, she collaborated with Luciano Berio on the background research for his Charles Eliot Norton lectures at Harvard University (1993-1994). She taught for decades at the University Ca' Foscari Venezia. Among her books in English are Yōgaku: A History of Japanese Music in the 20th Century (2002); Power, Beauty and Meaning: Eight Studies on Chinese Music (editor, 2005); and The Music of Jōji Yuasa (2012, presently being translated into Japanese). In addition, she is the author of other academic books in Italian and a number of essays in musicological magazines worldwide.
