Buddhist Studies have been irrevocably transformed by newdevelopments over the last several decades, especially the firstdecade of this millennium. In the field of textual studies, thediscovery and publication of manuscripts from Gandhara andCentral Asia, and increased access to manuscripts in other areashave completely altered our understanding of the literary, linguistic, and institutional history of Buddhism. In the field ofarchaeology, discoveries from Termez in Central Asia toKanaganahalli in Karnataka have brought with them newgeographies and new maps of the material history of theSaddharma. In this talk, I reflect ona field trip that I haveundertaken recently in Vindhyadesha, the heart of India, an areawhich saw an extraordinary expansion of Buddhism from the pre-Ashokan period up to the first or second centuries CE.
