C. Pottier @ Siam Society
03 FEBRUARY 15
On Thursday, January 19th, 2015, Christophe Pottier will present a paper, at a conference of the Siam Society, entitled: "Hide and seek in the jungle: recent developments in the vision of Angkor".
Abstract:
Since the first explorations in the mid-nineteen century, mapping Angkor has been central for revealing the archaeology of the successive medieval capitals of the Khmer Empire. After the early introduction of aerial reconnaissance in the Twenties, remote sensing evolved with the development of techniques, and widened the vision of Angkor and deepened the understanding of its history.
For the last two decades, a fundamental reappraisal of its urbanism has been operated, facilitated by the development of new geo-spatial facilities and new technologies (radar, LiDAR etc.). Beyond the study of the monumental remains of that civilization, the recent archaeological researches enlarged the scope of analysis. It revealed numerous non-monumental vestiges and integrated them into a broader landscape and environment. The presentation will show different steps of that recent evolution which has now shaped a new vision of Angkor and its urban history.
