Sanskrit and Tamil epigraphy

Tamil Epigraphy: The Inscriptions of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh

The published texts have been compiled and are currently being digitalised.
G. Vijayavenugopal is organising fieldwork expeditions with a view to checking the versions published in 2004. Where inscriptions cannot be found on site, the published versions are compared to the embossings in the archives of the Anthropological Survey of India (ASI) at Mysore. This project is ongoing. The final draft of the Karnataka Tamil inscriptions will be definitively completed in December 2009. A section of the corpus could then be published online in the same way as the epigraphic corpus of the temple at Puncai.

Corpus of Khmer Inscriptions (CKI)

Working in tandem with Gerdi Gerschheimer (EPHE), Dominic Goodall hopes to be able to continue to hold biannual conferences on Sanskrit inscriptions in Cambodia at the École Pratique des Hautes Études' 5th Section. Articles on a number of the inscriptions will be published following the conferences. Charlotte Schmid intends to contribute to the seminars with a view to establishing links between epigraphy and iconography (the appearance of iconography specific to Cambodia, the problematic nature of Pallava heritage in Southeast Asia, etc.).

Epigraphy Photo Library

The central importance of epigraphy in a large number of projects has given rise to the idea of an epigraphic photo library which would provide scholars with direct access to text as it appears on the stone into which it was originally carved. Unpublished inscriptions would thus be accessible to researchers and the many errors deriving from erroneous readings of inscriptions in already published works could be recognised and avoided.

The epigraphic photo library has not yet been set up, but the organizational foundations will be laid and the research teams established in early 2008 under the direction of Valérie Gillet at the EFEO Centre in Pondicherry. As in the case of the previous photo library, it is planned to make the collections accessible online. It will be necessary to organize new field missions to collect inscriptions. G. Vijayavenugopal will play a fundamental role in establishing the epigraphic photo library (identifying and reading inscriptions). Either R. Sathyanarayanan or Nibedita Rout may be responsible for technical aspects of the project as well as for classification work on the corpus.
