Colloquia, visits, and meetings
Franciscus Verellen, Director, is chairing the 9th Steering Committee meeting for IDEAS (Integrating and Developing European Asian Studies), a PCRD7 program coordinated by the EFEO, that is being held in Budapest on June 1. He is accompanied by Élisabeth Lacroix, administrator of the IDEAS program.
As part of this project, the University of Hamburg is organizing a round table on the topic "Religion en action: Islam et politique en Asie du Sud-Est à la lumière du Printemps arabe [Religion in action: Islam and politics in Southeast Asia in the light of the Arab Spring]" on June 12 in Brussels.

From June 8 to 13, at the invitation of His Excellency Mr. Thierry Mathou, French Ambassador to Myanmar, Franciscus Verellen is taking part in a multidisciplinary visit to Myanmar, proposed jointly by the Ministries of Foreign and European Affairs, of Culture and Communication (General Directorate of National Heritages), and of Higher Education and Research (represented by the EFEO), with a view to studying prospects for cooperation in matters of conservation, restoration, development, and training in heritage-related fields. The Director is to be accompanied by Pascal Royère, Director of Studies, and Jacques Leider, specialist of the history of Myanmar and head of the EFEO Centres of Chiang May (Thailand) and Yangon (Myanmar).

From May 30 to June 15 to Éric Bourdonneau is to be in Cambodia. On June 7, in Siem Reap, he will present a paper entitled "Mission archéologique à Koh Ker. La fouille du Prasat Kraham et l'étude du groupe sculpté de la danse de Siva [Archaeological project at Koh Ker. The excavation of the Prasat Kraham and the study of the sculpture group showing the dance of Siva]" at the 21st technical section of the CIC. Various workshops are also planned at Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Koh Ker, with partners working in the archaeological team: APSARA, the IWR (Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing, University of Heidelberg), the GACP (Hans and Esther Leisen, University of Cologne), the restoration workshop of the National Museum (Sok Soda and Bertrand Porte), and Olivier Cunin (architect and specialist in construction archaeology).

From June 4 to 6, at the colloquium on Epigraphical Evidence for the Formation and Rise of Early Śaivism: The Religious Landscape at the Time of the Composition and Spread of the Skandapurana being organized by the University of Groningen, Dominic Goodall is presenting a talk on "Evidence for the Development of Śaivism from Cambodian Epigraphy."
From June 6 to 11 Dominic Goodall will be in the University of Hamburg to work with Harunaga Isaacson and Alexis Sanderson, and then at Pondicherry from June 14 to September 15 to work at the EFEO center to work on various Shaiva projects with S.A.S. Sarma, R. Sathyanarayanan, and Manjunath Bhat.

As part of the research program on Dunhuang being carried out by the UMR 8155 (CRACO: Centre de recherche sur les civilisations de l'Asie orientale [Center for Research on the Civilizations of East Asia]) and by the EFEO (researchers of the group "Transmission et inculturation du bouddhisme en Asie" [Transmission and acculturation of Buddhism in Asia), Mrs. Chen Juxia and Mr. Zhao Shengliang, researchers at the Dunhuang Institute (China) are giving four lectures at the Maison de l'Asie, 22 avenue de Président-Wilson, 75016 Paris (Audiovisual Room on the ground floor).

On June 21 and 22 Kuo Liying is taking part in the colloquium On the Exchange of Beliefs and Practices between Esoteric Buddhism and Daosim in China, organized by Henrik Sørensen (Visiting Research Fellow, Ruhr-University Bochum), as part of the International Research Consortium: Dynamics in the History of Religions between Asia and Europe, at Ruhr-University Bochum (Germany). Her talk is on "Buddhist Sūtra-pillars and Daoist scriptures."

Pierre-Yves Manguin wrote a report on the doctoral thesis of Phaedra Bouvet, which was written under the supervision of Valentine Roux (University of Paris-West Nanterre), and he takes part in the doctoral viva on June 11. The thesis is entitled "Interactions culturelles entre l'Asie du Sud-Est et l'Inde aux IVe-IIe s. av. J.C.: Étude technologique des céramiques de Khao Sam Kaeo" [Cultural interactions between Southeast Asia and India in the 4th to 2nd centuries B.C.E.: Technological studies of Khao Sam Kaeo ceramics].

On June 18 and 19, Pierre-Yves Manguin takes part in the international conference on New Research in Historical Campā Studies, co-organized by the EFEO and the Nalanda-Srivijaya Centre of the ISEAS in Singapore. The conference will take place in the salon on the first floor of the EFEO, 22 avenue du Président Wilson, Paris 75116 (see the program).

Pierre-Yves Manguin gives a presentation entitled "Proto-historic exchange in the Eastern Indian Ocean: a re-evaluation of current paradigms" at the international conference on Crossroads between Empires and Peripheries - Knowledge Transfer, Product Exchange and Human Movement in the Indian Ocean World, which is held from June 21 to 23 at the University of Ghent.

From June 1 to 22, Arlo Griffiths is visiting Europe. On June 4 and 5, he is taking part in the colloquium on Epigraphical Evidence for the Formation and Rise of Early Śaivism: The Religious Landscape at the time of the Composition and Spread of the Skandapurāna at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. He is talking on the topic "Śaivism in Early Historical Southeast Asia: the case of Campā."

He is then be working with Emmanuel Francis (Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures, University of Hamburg) on the projected publication of the earliest historical inscriptions from Indonesia. On June 18 and 19 he is taking part in the colloquium on New Research in Historical Campā Studies, where he is talking on "Vīrabhadravarmadeva: inscriptions and sculptures from the last king of independent Campā (15th century CE)" at the EFEO (see above).

On June 6 and 7 Christophe Pottier is in Siem Reap for the upcoming Technical Session of the International Coordination Committee for Angkor. He will there give a presentation on "Recherches récentes de la Mafkata" [Recent research on the Mafkata]. From June 9 to 11, he is taking part in the Siem Reap Conference on Special Topics in Khmer Studies, whose topic this year is "Religious Studies in Cambodia: Understand the Old and Trace the New." There he will talk on "From Bones to Ashes: Archaeological evidences of religious shifts in the Angkor region."
