The Burmese Golden Letter
On May 7, 1756, the Burmese King Alaungmintaya sent a letter written on a sheet of gold embellished with twenty-four rubies to the English King George II. He offered the British East India Company a trading post in Pathein and hoped for an alliance with England. The original of this letter, sent by George II to his personal library in Hanover, was "forgotten" for some 250 years because the king's librarians had cataloged it as a declaration of friendship from a king in southern India.. First approached in 2007 to undertake the identification of the manuscript, Jacques Leider subsequently dedicated some two years to historical research in the United Kingdom and in Burma to establish the interest and historical significance of this exceptional letter. It is undoubtedly the sole remaining Burmese golden letter.
The official presentation of the letter to the public took place at the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Library in Hanover on January 18, in the presence of more than 450 guests, and gave rise to a surprising degree of media coverage. A presentation by Jacques Leider at the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in Paris on January 21 introduced this extraordinary Burmese historical document to the French scholarly world.
Jacques Leider is a lecturer at the EFEO and a specialist in Burmese history and historiography.

On February 2, Franciscus Verellen, members of the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres, is received in audience by His Majesty Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia. In the presence of His Excellency Mr. Christian Connan, the French Ambassador to Cambodia, Verellen presents His Majesty, in the name of Jean Leclant, Permananent Secretary of the Academy, with the collection of speeches commemorating the installation in the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres of His Majesty Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia on 12 March 2010.
On February 7 Franciscus Verellen is taking part in the international colloquium of the PCRD7 IDEAS program (a program being coordinated by the EFEO) on the topic "Towards a better understanding of Asia for decision-makers in Europe: Exploring ways to strengthen links with European Asian Studies." The colloquium is being organized by the Chamber of Commerce of the city of Hamburg.

From February 26 to March 5, François Lachaud is going to the Universidade Católica Portuguesa to give a series of three seminars at the Instituto de Estudos Orientais on the topic "De l'ukiyo-e au Shin-hanga : mélancolie et discours critiques sur la modernité japonaise (1858-1942) [From ukiyo-e to the Shin-hanga: melancholy and critical comments on Japanese modernity (1858-1942)]."

Her dissertation title is "A Saiva Scripture from Ancient Java Studied in the Light of Related Old Javanese and Sanskrit Texts" and she is working with Professor Alexander Lubotsky on the study of Book 4 of the Paippaladasa?hita (an ancient Sanskrit text in the Atharvaveda tradition).

From February 2 to 24, Peter Skilling is visiting India (Delhi, Haryana, Panjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal) and is going to the earliest Buddhist sites and the monuments built by the Emperor Asoka (v. 304 - 232 B.C.E.).
On February 2, Peter Skilling is taking part in a conference in memory of E. Gene Smith, distinguished scholar of Tibetan Buddhism, at the India International Centre (New Delhi).

From January 31 to February 1 Franciscus Verellen is visiting the Chinese Univerisy of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the EFEO Center. He is meeting with Kenneth Young as well as with Henry Wong (Vice President of the CUHK), Ms Jenny So (Director of the Chinese Studies Institute at the CUHK) and Professor Ho Che-wah (Director of the CUHK's Center for Research on Ancient Chinese Texts). The purpose is to sign an agreement giving the EFEO free access to the CHANT database on ancient Chinese texts at the website:: http://www.chant.org/.

Michel Lorrillard is finishing up the archaeological work underway since early January on a buried monument at the ancient city of Wat Phu (Champassak province) and opening the excavation of the Nong Hua Thong site (Savannakhet province). These two projects are being financed by the Excavation Commission and the EFEO. They are being directed by Marielle Santoni (CNRS) and Christine Hawixbrock, in partnership with the General Directorate for the Patrimony of the Laotian DPR.

Kominami Ichirô, Honorary Professor at Kyoto University and guest researcher at the Kyoto EFEO Center, has been named Director of the Museum of Ancient Art,the Sen-oku hakukokan. The Sen-oku hakukokan hold the Sumitomo collection of East Asian art (Chinese, Korean, and Japanese), about 3,000 objects of which most are bronzes and mirrors, paintings and calligraphic examples, Buddhist art objects, and objects related to tea ceremonies. Professor Kominami was an honorary visiting professor at the Kyoto Center from April, 2005, to 2010.
